Alvaro Barrington (b. 1983 Caracas, Venezuela) is the child of Grenadian and Haitian migrant workers, raised between the Caribbean and Brooklyn, NY by a network of his relatives. Barrington says his early experiences in community have made him who he is today. His approach to making is likewise an inclusive process – incorporating non-traditional materials (such as burlap, concrete, cardboard, postcards, clothing) and methods into his paintings. The works draw upon artistic and cultural references important to Barrington: the media, music, art history, and politics are just a few of his influences. Beyond painting, Barrington’s practice includes collaborations ranging from joint exhibitions, performance, concerts, and philanthropy.

In 2021, Barrington’s was featured in two group exhibitions at the gallery: Tales of Manhattan: A 25th Anniversary Exhibition and 11.
