Lara Schnitger

Opening on December 9, Anton Kern Gallery will present an exhibition by Dutch artist Lara Schnitger. This will be the artist’s second solo show in New York.

Widely known in Europe and an established member of the Dutch art scene, Lara Schnitger has been included in exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Bonnefanten Museum in Holland. Both museums have recently acquired major sculptures. She has also had a solo show at the University of Buffalo Art Gallery in New York and is currently living and working in Japan. Schnitger’s work explores the formal and dynamic qualities of the sculptural environment. Using fabric, foam, wood and plastic, her sculptures stand by the sheer tension of an irrational network of elements. The atmosphere of the installations is like that of an abstract and artificial garden, whose flimsy structures delineate monumental shapes that are strangely natural. In different degrees of abstraction, the artist plays with themes of fashion, privacy and sexuality, experimenting with form and texture in sculpture, video and collage. Schnitger’s all-embracing installation sculptures are suspended in a delicate balancing act that operate from a small center and explode profusely into space.

Concurrent with this exhibition, Schnitger will also construct an installation at Uscha Pohl’s Up & Co. and contribute to a special issue of the magazine Very.
