In Greek mythology, a Chimera is a fire-breathing female monster with a lion’s head, a goat’s body, and a serpent’s tail. The term can also refer to a thing that is wished for, but in reality is impossible to achieve. These two definitions embody important aspects of Julie Curtiss’ practice: namely, the contradictions that arise in the juxtaposition and combination of differing forces, and the play between illusion and reality. Curtiss’ work often subverts our expectations--depicting what one would think of as the quotidian in a surreal twist, exposing our suppositions and ungrounding our notions of truth. With her fastidious attention to detail and embrace of the ambiguous, the artist here offers a savory, perplexing, and bizarre dish; meant to both entice and repel, leaving the viewer with more questions than answers, and a slight sensation of both hunger and queasiness.
