Nina, the sole protagonist in Aliza Nisenbaum’s painting “Tumbao de Omambo,” reclines on her day bed in a deliberate pose of relaxation and composure. Arms, legs, head, her entire posture, breathe the air of imminent motion--as if ready to jump into a dancer’s stance at any moment. Nina is a member of The Mambo Dance Project in Los Angeles, a troupe of Salsa dancers the artist has gotten to know and worked with over the past five months. Here, Nisenbaum plays with the classical form of the odalisque but has elevated the sitter from an image of passivity to a lively, even rhythmic image of self-determination.
