Like many artists during the lockdown in LA, Lara Schnitger was faced with the practical problem of not having access to certain of her usual materials. Instead of seeing this as a limitation, Schnitger embraced the opportunity to work with what she had available at the studio, particularly her archive of patterned fabrics. "Double Lotus," depicting two entangled lovers, is the artist's most intricate fabric painting to date. The process of cutting and pasting the shapes for this detailed composition required great labor and a meditative focus. The couple's pose is inspired by Chinese erotica and also the human need for closeness with others, which was significantly hindered due to the global health crisis. This desire for intimacy is also expressed in the merger of different fabrics, which the artist sees as a symbolic orgy in itself.
