Francis Upritchard: Paris+ par Art Basel 2023
Past exhibition
Overview
Anton Kern Gallery is thrilled to participate in Paris+ this year with a solo presentation by Francis Upritchard. Conceived as a compendium of new and recent works by the artist, the immersive, museological display gives a comprehensive overview of her practice. Front and center in the booth are new monumental works in both bronze and balata rubber - a rare and ecologically friendly material that must be sculpted quickly and under water. Upritchard’s creatures tread the line between realism and fantasy, and here include mermaids, centaurs, dinosaurs, and elongated fishermen.
The presentation also includes Upritchard’s polymer-clay figures in tie-dyed silks and bespoke garments; ceramics; glassworks; watercolors; and a vitrine with miniature gloves, hats, and vessels. Her work blends references from literature, ancient sculptures, burial grounds, science fiction, folklore, miniatures, and frescoes - using a wide variety of materials to mine these inspirations and interests. Much of the work in this presentation is related to the artist’s recent exhibitions at the Guangzhou Triennial, Guangzhou, China (2023), Kunsthaus Pasquart, Biel, Switzerland (2022), Christchurch Art Gallery, New Zealand (2022), Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Sint-Martens-Latem, Belgium (2020), Barbican Centre, London, England (2018-2019), and Vive Arte Viva, Venice Biennial, Italy (2017). Recently, the artist unveiled her large-scale commission, Here Comes Everybody, outside the Art Gallery New South Wales, Sydney, Australia (2022).
