Text Drawings: David Shrigley
Anton Kern Gallery is pleased to present a recent group of Japanese ink drawings by David Shrigley. Each of the twenty works, rendered in brushy black all-caps lettering against a neutral background, delivers a message from the artist. Similar to Shrigley's well-known Signs and News series, the text drawings are formatted to harness the immediacy of public signage and newsstand headlines. Declarative missives such as Fuck Is A Word I Use Often; The Works Make Themselves / The Works Don't Make Themselves; and Don't Blame The Idiots, Blame The Non-Idiots visually arrest the viewer's attention, offering messages that alternate between the mundane, paradoxical, and profound.
