Marcus Jahmal: Art Basel Miami Beach Kabinett
Past exhibition
Overview
Marcus Jahmal is a self-taught painter producing surreal narratives that exist as documents of our current moment, that also embody a timelessness. His work is charged with an intuitive sense of image and color to evoke the ways the personal belies the larger implications of the universal. Jahmal’s practice draws from diverse sources such as photographs and memories, and moves fluidly between genres to defy explicit categorization. Interiors, still life, landscape, and portraiture all populate his oeuvre and are united by a drive to push his art and art history forward.
His presentation is influenced by his upbringing in Brooklyn in addition to Southern familial roots. Employing bold hues, reminiscent of homes found in New Orleans, like bright greens and blues, and incorporating a patchwork of repeated characters hailing from a metropolis – pigeons, men working out in public, cops – Jahmal’s works have a poetic rhythm to them. The vignettes feel pulled from dreams yet familiar too.
